      I would like to have a different page be the “landing page” of my site. I would prefer to give a bit of explanatory verbiage, more of an “about” type of page. Then from there people can go to the “home” page (with the gallery and all) from that initail page.

      So, I guess I am asking how can I cause another page to be the first one that shows up?

      Just switch to home page as static page in the WP reading settings. Create the page first so it can be selected. You\’ll need to make another page for the blog if you have one.
