      Hi,

      I’ve been looking through your new template, Enlightenment, and it looks very cool.

      What I noticed immediately though is that you addressed the speed issue and optimized it – loading scripts and css in the footer, etc …

      I still love Pinboard though, (as do my visitors) and was wondering (and hoping) you were planning to upgrade it with that very same feature – loading what can be safely moved to the footer …I’ve been inquiring Jetpack for the same –

      Are there any plans for that?

      Also – if I may, I’d like to ask a question about Enlightenment, here in this question/topic… since it’s still essentially about the same issue – the speed optimization…

      Does Enlightenment allow you to customize the column layout so that you can have say – 2 columns that are your streaming posts (like Pinboard) with a static 3rd column? (like Pinboard) … in other words, I’m wondering if I switched to Enlightenment, if I could customize it to look the same way my site does now (http://bcr8tive.com) but have the advantages of the bells and whistles you’ve implemented on the new template.. (?)

      When I was checking out your demos, I saw only static posts/pages with side column and haven’t tested it.

      The long-term plan is to have all our themes ported to Enlightenment Framework. This means they will take advantage of most or all features that are currently present in Enlightenment Theme but this will also bring a revamp of the theme’s design since most are more than 2 years old and their design is dated.

      To display masonry grid with a sidebar is possible with a maximum of 2 columns. Just set the grid to 2 Columns and the layout to Content / Sidebar and it’s all set. A grid of 3 columns or more ignores the layout setting and forces the full width layout. You can see some screenshots in this article. They have a color overlay but I think you can get the idea.

      By the way, Wordfence is restricting access to your website for me. It shows the message “Reason: Advanced blocking in effect.”

      (Is there a way you can provide me with the ip or region of your ip so I can whitelist you?)
      (Had a slew of hack attempts and in some cases blocked whole regions just to be done with them)

      As for the template – that’s good news but also not so good news for me.
      I have done quite a bit of customization on Pinboard for one – and I don’t know how I can work on having to RE-customize, when activating a new template makes it ‘live’. I have an established site with established and growing visitors and over 600 posts to get up to speed now.

      When I ‘test preview’ i see that i’d have to be able to hit the ground running or my site would look like hell… My posts do not utilize gallery features (due to the fact that its optimized primarily for Pinterest) and I do NOT want an open blog format where everything displays without actually entering the post – AND I need to insure the post widths are the same etc etc

      I wish I knew how I could customize a new template BEFORE I loaded it to go “live”…

      Making a theme backwards compatible is not a bulletproof procedure. A change as small as moving scripts to the footer could break lots of websites even if they made customizations with a child theme. Every small change could potentially break a workflow and there’s no way around this. That’s never good news but then again clinging to legacy implementations for the sake of backwards compatibility also isn’t a good idea.

      How does this theme appeal to you now? I did it back in 2009 and it was one of the most popular themes of its time. Eventually we had to discontinue it because it wasn’t keeping up with current technology and design trends. Pinboard’s design already looks dated and that’s how it will feel like in 2 years if we allow the same mistakes to happen.

      There’s no way to customize a template without testing it in a live environment. The way I do it when I need to customize a website before moving it to production is clone the website in a local environment (all you need to do is copy the files and database and make some changes) and make all customizations and tests in the local server and when it’s stable enough I upload the theme to the live server.

      Back in June when I redesigned this website I cloned the existing content on my local server and tested the redesign on existing posts and forum topics. It’s an overhead but making something functional requires work and attention to detail. Development of Enlightenment Theme took 4 years of research, coding, scrapping and testing and the theme is far from perfect. There are no shortcuts.

      Anyway, the demo … in terms of the functions you have in place on it (like the search at the top near the menu) and what looks to be flexible options for the post area, I can see the potential for liking it – IF it was customizable graphically, and didn’t have to have that boxy look – I’m a stickler for alignments – so I’d want to be able to tweak –

      I understand what you’re saying about backwards compatibility – and now I’m questioning how I went about handling SOME things on my bcr8tive site – ugh – I had a few intentions with that site that I accomplished – and it took on a life of its own… but if I change themes I cannot go live – not with so many posts and visitors –

      When I used to develop static sites I always tested locally too – I just wasn’t aware until you just said it now – that I can run WP locally!? I’ll be ecstatic if so, it will solve a ton of problems for me. I can start the migration to the new template and not be n a maniac rush to get it done – like you said it can take a long time! (and I have clients besides myself)

      PS: I did find why your ip was blocked – the ‘area’ has given me a lot of trouble w/admin hack attempts and I swiped whole ranges –

      i whitelisted YOURs but the area/range is still closed – I may have to open it, so you can get in, & then close it again after if you find you can’t. That range hasn’t stopped trying to get in.

      I am able to see your website now. I see you did little customizations. With Enlightenment you are able to have a dark Navbar, change the background and customize the typography, you can even use any font from the Google directory.

      Can you elaborate a little about what you have in mind when you say customizable graphically? What do you mean by boxy in comparison to Pinboard and what do you feel is not properly aligned?

      Here are the steps to host WordPress locally:

      • First you need to install a local server. Try XAMPP if you’re on Windows or MAMP if you’re on Mac.
      • After installing you’ll have an “htdocs” directory where you can transfer the files from your live server.
      • Export your live server’s database in phpMyAdmin to an SQL file.
      • Open the SQL file in a text editor and do a search/replace of “http://bcr8tive.com/” with “http://localhost/”.
      • Import the SQL file in phpMyAdmin of your local server.
      • Open wp-config.php and and point to the new database.

      Sorry it took so long to get back to you. You’ve been on my list of To-do’s but I’ve been crazy busy.
      Thanks too for the directions on how to install WP locally – I’m going to try it (as soon as I can)

      About the boxy look & things I’d tweak graphically on the older template etc …

      I hope to be able to explain this in text …
      & I’m going to use a screenshot to try to explain – A lot pertains to the UX, usability studies and eye tracking research – per Marketing on the internet as well as optimal graphic design practices –

      On blogs it’s much more difficult to use the most optimal design practices that pertain to the above – however there are still things to avoid that are (unconsciously) distracting to the User – such as lines that don’t align – or intersect, that run into 3 and 4 different information areas, making it difficult for the viewer to “be led” or know intuitively WHAT to look at next – it causes a puzzle, a jumble of competing areas and loses its FLOW – a left to right ease – smooth transitions – that coordinate with the way we have learned to read, from top left – to the right, down – to the left, then right, etc – and USING that knowledge, its a good practice to place key visuals and things like CTA’s in strategic places to elicit an intended reaction from the end user.

      When the lines are haphazard – or all colored in – they compete –

      I’ve tried to show with the red lines what I’m referring to … (after you see it, think about how widgets and content area heights can change depending on what is IN them, so when they are colored, they draw even more attention to the fact that they are all haphazardly aligned – )

      It’s 1 reason why I like Pinboard so much, because it’s light and neutral and allows key visuals and strategic coloring to draw the eyes …

      I believe we were in different places here. The theme I was interested why you prefer Pinboard over it was Enlightenment and I originally thought you made the comments about being boxy and not graphically customizable about Enlightenment which kind of raised a “code red” as customizability was one of the main goals of this theme.

      The theme you referenced is Cover WP which was done in 2009 and discontinued in 2011. Its time has passed and there are no plans to resurrect it. The reason I brought it up was because we had do discontinue it because it was no longer adhering to current standards and trends, including because of the reasons you mentioned above and I’m trying not to let the same happen to Pinboard, that’s why a visual interface update is planned.

      I’m terribly sorry if I wasted your time because of verbal misunderstanding. Constructive feedback is always welcome and you are right about the poor visual guides in Cover WP. Anytime you have an idea you’re welcome to share it.
