      Since I use a lot of categories, I’d like to format them in either a drop-down list or in a right, left/two column design. I’d definitely prefer to make the two-column style work for aesthetic and usability reasons but I’m open to learning either way.

      I know that under “widgets” there is a “categories” widget that can be dragged into the sidebar and it includes the option of showing the categories as a drop down, but the widget doesn’t seem to work with your theme or I’m missing something. I’ve managed to make the site display the post count for each category but that’s as far as I could get.

      I apologize if there’s a really obvious answer to this question but I’m a newbie. Thanks in advance for any tips and thanks for the great theme.

      The left and right sidebars work like 2 columns. What you could do is add a custom menu widget to each of them and add the desired categories. That way they will appear like in 2 columns.
