    The solution would be to add extra css classes for the compatibility mode and a script to detect it. I don’t know exactly how to detect the comp mode but maybe something like this:

    the compatibility mode is a nightmare for cross browser functions. There are more issues than the social media icons with this mode and one should one use this mode when really really necessary.

    IE8 in compatibilty mode is a nightmare for cross browser functions. There are many more issues than the social media icons and its a mode which one should only use if really really necessary.

    You control the layout of the theme in theme/options. Try the layout with no sidebars, which is smaller than the rest.

    Concerning the slider images, the slider always takes the full size of the blog width for the image and expands the image proportional in height. When using the smaller layout with no sidebars, it reduces the width of the blog and therefore the slider image aswell.

    As the slider always takes the full width of the blog, the only way to reduce an image, other than the layout with no sidebars, is to reduce the heigth of the image before you upload it.

    Another way to reduce the slider image in width is to change the width of the blog.

    Sure, you can try to replace the excerpt with the content, but that has other issues than one might not think of. By default the theme doesn’t have this option. Once you changed it, you can decide how many featured posts to be shown on the homepage in the theme/options, even all are possible than.

    As far as I remember there was a thread in this forum discussing this issue with a code snippet that needs to be replaced (excerpt vs. content) not long time ago. Maybe you will find it.
