    You say you changed is_home() to is_front_page(), but actually you should try:
    is_home() || is_front_page()
    so it’s true for both cases.

    To be sure which template is being used for a particular page, I use the plugin Debug Options with the option “Theme” selected.

    I guess that your blog page uses index.php as page template, so you could try to change the condition on line 3 of index.php and delete the is_home() part. Or if you use front-page.php for your main page, you could delete line 3-5 in index.php entirely.

You only download a copy of the files to your computer (with a FTP program like FileZilla), edit the files locally and upload them to your site again. If this is new for you, then you should try the plugin I mentioned. An editor like Notepad++ is a program for on a computer, not for on a website.

    1. the white border can be removed by:
    #header-img {
    padding: 0;
    }

    2. You have to edit your header image when you want to remove the rest of the white border on the left and right (they are in your image).

    In the last version of Esplanade the line number has become 590 indeed!
    In my child theme I didn’t use page.php, but front-page.php instead. This is higher in the hierarchy and it makes the slider appear on the front page only. See also: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy

    In my functions.php I redefined the complete function by copying and changing:
    function esplanade_call_scripts() { … } (line 564 – 609)
    where the condition in line 590 is:
    ( (is_home() || is_front_page()) && ! is_paged() )

    You can redefine every style by copying the appropriate rules, but you need more than one rule to change the colors.
    Tip: In Google Chrome: Right-click on any page element and select Inspect element. Now you can see which styles are used to show the selected element.

    I figured out the use of child themes just recently so I hope I can help you with this. What have you created in your child theme by now?
    1. create a new folder like myTheme in your themes folder
    2. create the file style.css in that folder with code like:
    /*
    Theme Name: myTheme
    Theme URI: http://example.com/
    Description: Child theme for the Esplanade theme
    Author: Your name here
    Author URI: http://example.com/about/
    Template: esplanade
    Version: 0.1.0
    */
    @import url(“../esplanade/style.css”);

    3. Be sure you use the correct name of the parent theme as Template.
    4. Activate the child theme in WordPress. Your site should now look exactly like the esplanade theme. (remove the @import line to see your site without any styles)
    5. Create extra style rules in your style.css to customize the looks…
    6. To customize an existing file in the parent theme: copy the file to your child theme and edit it there.
    7. To customize functions.php: create a new functions.php in your child theme with your own code. Important: both versions of functions.php will be loaded, first the one in your child theme and then the one in the parent theme. You can redefine a function in your child theme, but make sure there’s a check in the parent theme like:
    if ( ! function_exists( ‘function_name’ ) ) …
