Must have been something to do with NextGEN Gallery plugin. I had upgraded to NextGEN Gallery v2.0.4 and was having problems, so deleted it, and lo and behold the sub-menu issues with my site disappeared.

#header input#s { display: none; }

No matter what height I specify for #site-title it doesn’t shrink beyond a certain point.
When specify the CSS code suggested by Alexander, and then reload my site in another tab in my browser, my site briefly flashes up with the shorter header, but then the page instantly refreshes and the header is back to its old height.
It’s almost as if there is another setting somewhere which is overriding the custom CSS setting. Is there somewhere else I should also be making this change to the #site-title attribute?

I was missing the tag at the end of a link.

I had a look at http://www.zestygift.com/ and the header on this site is about the height I am aiming for (though I don’t know if this is before or after applying the above CSS).
I’ve experimented with everything from a height of 92px down to 5px, but it seems to reach a point beyond which it won’t go any smaller. Why is this?
Is it something to do with the fact that the site tagline is wrapping around and appearing underneath the logo, instead of aligned with the site title?
I want it to be aligned, but don’t know how to achieve this. Any suggestions???

It must be a bug in the preview that you see when you upload the image. After I upload an image (or select one from the media library) the Preview across the top of the Appearance > Header page shows my image stretched completely out of proportion. However, if I save my changes and view the published site, the image is there correctly, and then the Preview fixes itself.
Any idea how I can “flatten” the header/banner at the top, so it takes up less screen space?
And the site’s tagline has wrapped around, and pushed too far down so it doesn’t align with the site title. Any idea how to fix that?

The background colour is now maroon, but the site title is not appearing – presumably because it is now the same colour as the background.
I removed the CSS code you suggested for the site-title and site-description, and changed the colour of the site title to white (#FFFFFF) in Theme Options > Header, and now it is appearing ok.
Now I just need to find a way of inserting the school logo in the header, similar to how it appears on http://www.wpspandc.com . When I insert the logo using the option under Theme Options > Header, it inserts a stretched or cropped version all the way across the top of the page. I want it to appear left-justified like my old website. Is this possible?
