      Since I can’t edit my post above.
      File permissions checked twice all 777
      I’m root owner on the ftp
      I’ve deactivated all my plugins and tried different combinations of active ones
      I’ve changed the upload settings from organising into month/year folders as that is the only setting left to edit relating to images.

      I still get the error.

      I’ve got my husband on the case now, he just tried 2 htaccess tweeks from some of the suggestions on wordpress support and a few ideas of his own and neither of them worked either.

      The only way I can get an image up at the moment is to manually upload via ftp, which of course would mean manually resizing all the images. (not an ideal situation)

      He’s still looking into it but I’m preparing for a fresh reinstall.

      I hope I am understanding you correctly and this is the problem you are having.
      Are you using the widget area left or right or the widget area top or bottom
      It confused me at first but the left and right work for the 4 column layout because they are a thinner container but if you show them on a standard side bar layout they leave a gap.
      If you use top (left side) and bottom (right side) for the wider layout the widgets will span the entire space.

      And after writing that out I hope it also makes sense.

      Mine should be 777 but I’ll double check them first. Could be something just hasn’t picked up on the permissions.

      I admit that seems more logical, my husband owns the server and his images all upload fine on his blogs I never got round to asking him about it. (I don’t do code that’s his job.)

      I had saw that it wasn’t compatible, I had only tried it as an alternative because I couldn’t get the native view to work.

      In the end I had settled for making the link in the navigation point directly to the category which worked but then I accidentally hit the portfolio page url when I was trying to look up another page and was quite surprised to see it all working as it should.

      So problem solved, I just don’t know how.

      As for the comment form on the pages go to pages in your dashboard and select quick edit for the pages you want to remove the comments on, uncheck the allow comments box and save it. That one took me a moment to figure out as in older versions of wp the option used to be accessible on the main edit page.

      Looks like you have full posts set to 0 so it’s only displaying the grid view.
      Appearance > Theme options
      In the general tab scroll down to the header Home page and set the full posts to display to 3 to replicate the demo layout.

      I’m getting that as well though I had it with other themes I was testing too.
      It seems to take exception to pngs (a lot of jpeg images worked) though the images smaller than 300px square all worked fine regardless of file extension.

      Out of your list of plugins I only have jetpack, and I had the issue before installing that.
